In a welcome decision for taxpayers throughout the country, the government has announced an extension in the annual GST return filing deadline. The due dates for filing GST annual returns (GSTR-9) has been extended to December 31, 2019 for 2017-18 and to March 31, 2020 for 2018-19. The dates for filing the reconciliation statement (GSTR-9C) have also been extended.
Providing further relief, the government has also decided to streamline the process of the filling the two GST forms and therefore, have made various fields optional.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CMIC) released the following statement:
“The government has decided today (Thursday) to extend the due dates of filing of Form GSTR-9 (Annual Return) and Form GSTR-9C (Reconciliation Statement) for 2017-18 to December 31, 2019 and for 2018-19 to March 2020.”
The previous deadlines for GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C were November 30. 2019 for 2017-18 and December 31, 2019 for 2018-19.
These decisions have been taken by the government to encourage GST return filing among taxpayers with the hope that simplified forms and an extension for the deadline will enable all relevant taxpayers to file the GST annual return and reconciliation statement in time. The government is trying to address the challenges faced by GST taxpayers in a responsive manner.
