GST which is billed as one of the biggest tax reforms in the history of independent India will come into effect with a special session to be held in central hall in parliament where some of the legends like iconic actor Amitabh Bachchan, famous singer Lata Mangeshkar and industry stalwart Ratan Tata will be in attendance.

The event will be graced by President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The list of invitees also include two former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and HD Deva Gowda. Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Vice President Hamid Ansari will also be present on the dais along with the PM and the President. BJP president Amit Shah, former finance minister Yashwant Sinha, former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and National Conference leader Abdul Rahim Rather are other political personalities to attend the ceremony.

However, the Congress has decided to give this event a miss, dubbing it as a grand self-promotion gimmick.

The launch event will commence at 11pm and continue past midnight.  The arrival of Goods and Services (GST) will be declared with sounding of a gong.

The event will start with the arrival of President Pranab Mukherjee at 10:55pm. Finance minister Arun Jaitley will give a brief introduction of GST followed by the screening of a short film on GST. President Pranab Mukherjee will also address the gathering. At the midnight he will sound a gong to announce the arrival of GST.

The launch of GST is considered as the dawn of a new era in Indian taxation system as it subsumes various indirect taxes levied by central government, state governments and the union territories. How it impacts the Indian economy and the life of common people is something worth watching.
